Economic Impact of Tamworth Castle

Durnin Research Ltd is delighted to be appointed by Tamworth Borough Council to assess the Economic Impact of Tamworth Castle.

From its origins back in Anglo Saxon Times through to Victorian times, Tamworth Castle boasts a wealth of history.  A residence of the Mercian kings in Anglo Saxon times, the Castle fell into disuse during the Viking invasions. Refortified by the Normans and later enlarged, the building is today one of the best-preserved motte-and-bailey castles in England. It was purchased by the Tamworth Corporation in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee.

This study follows a range of investment and activities supported through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and other funders.  This has included capital renovations on the curtain wall and The Gatehouse, and a wide range of events programming and events in 2024, including the Athelstan 1100 festival.

This research will establish the economic impacts of Tamworth Castle to inform business planning, build on the success of Athelstan 1100 and other recent events, and shape future development and investment.
