Durnin Research Ltd and Jenni Waugh Consulting Ltd are delighted to have been reappointed by Newark and Sherwood District Council as Evaluators of the Newark Castle Gatehouse Project following a successful National Lottery Heritage Fund application.
As well as providing essential conservation work to prevent further deterioration of the Gatehouse, the project looks to establish the Castle as a destination attraction at the gateway to the town and introduce a tower-top viewing platform from which visitors can overlook great views of Trent Valley. The redevelopment will enable people to discover the origins of the castle and explore the wealth of its history which dates to the 12th century. It aims to enhance and protect the natural environment and green space within this historic site, establishing more biodiversity and enhancing accessibility through landscape development.
The evaluation will capture learning from the experience gained in undertaking the project, and measure success against the expected outcomes. It will include input from visitors, community participants, volunteers, staff, and other stakeholders. As well as the Heritage Fund funding, the project also has £3m investment from Newark and Sherwood District Council’s application to the Government’s Towns Fund initiative through Newark Town board. Work on the Castle is expected to begin in late 2024 with construction likely to take a couple of years.
